The Duns Town TrailMercat CrossErected in 1892 in Market Square |
Mercat Cross is prominently located on the south side of Market Square. The Cross was erected in 1792 on the north side and taken down in 1816, giving way to the Town Hall building which has since been demolished. Re-erected in the Public Park in 1897, the Cross remained there until 1994, when it was returned to Market Square.
It appears that a church building has existed here from ancient times. One structure was taken down in 1790 and its successor, erected in 1792, was destroyed by fire in 1879. The present building was restored in 1880. The adjoining church hall was originally the Parish School.
Many centuries ago, a bog or marsh covered the area to the front of this building. The only way of crossing was by way of a causeway. During the turbulent times which prevailed, the causeway was guarded by a Barnyken (or fortified building).
