Tinkers Acre

Where travelling people pitched their tents

14. Tinkers Acre

The name of this field (which is on the right at the top of Castle Street) is derived from times when Travelling People camped here. They were allowed to pitch tents or set up their caravans.

Walk through the archway into Duns Castle Estate and continue for approximately 400 yards.

15. Duns Scotus Cairn

Erected in 1966 by the Franciscan Order of the Roman Catholic Church, this cairn commemorates the seven hundredth anniversary of the birth of John Duns Scotus.

Return towards the archway through which you came. If you are energetic the path to the site of the old town and Duns Law is signposted on your left.

16. The Site of the Old Town

On the west side of Duns Law, known as the Bruntons (or Brunt Town), there is a cairn marking the site of the old town of Duns.
