The Duns Town Trail

King's Entry and Parliament Square

Named after James VI visited Duns in 1602

10. King's Entry and Parliament Square

The alley to the right of the property was once known as King's Entry after James VI visited Duns in 1602. The area to the left of the building (now the roadway) was known as Parliament Square.

Continue north up Castle Street, crossing over Newtown Street.

11. Private Schools

At one time there were many private schools in Duns, two of which could be found at Castle Street, at 47 and 68.

12. 70 Castle Street

This house was known as The Beggars Neffie (fistful) from the fact that the man who lived there took part in a peculiar form of barter. The local beggars were given a handful of meal from the town's charities and traded this for cash from the occupant of number 70 - perhaps then making for the nearest alehouse!

13. 61 Castle Street

Set into the ground in front there is a wheel shape used by a Blacksmith during the process of fitting a metal rim to a cartwheel.
